Building a new Laboratory for Power Systems and Drives
This strategic step represents one of the most significant development projects in recent years.
KONČAR – Electrical Engineering Institute has commenced construction of a new Laboratory for Power Systems and Drives in the municipality of Bedekovčina, building on the capabilities of its existing facility in Zagreb. As one of KONČAR’s most significant recent investments, exceeding EUR 20 million, the project is a strategic undertaking that supports both institutional growth and local development.
With a testing area of 2,700 square meters and a height of 28 meters, the facility will rank among Europe’s most advanced laboratories for large electrical equipment, exceptional in both size and capability.

It will serve as a center of excellence for type testing, specialized procedures, and research on high-voltage components. Matching the technical performance of top-tier global laboratories, it is designed to support innovation in next-generation energy technologies, particularly those aligned with sustainable energy systems and High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission.
The laboratory will play a pivotal role in testing components for HVDC power transmission systems, a critical technology for long-distance and cross-border energy flows, including cables and converters supplied by top-tier global manufacturers.
Beyond strengthening testing capabilities, this investment signals a strategic move to elevate Croatia’s role in the international energy technology landscape. It expands KONČAR’s global reach and supports the broader energy transition toward more reliable, efficient, and environmentally responsible power networks. This state-of-the-art laboratory underscores KONČAR’s strategic vision – driving forward technological innovation, supporting industrial leadership, and enhancing its position on the global stage in high-voltage testing and power systems engineering.
