First appearance at WorldSkills Croatia

KONČAR – Transformer Tanks participated for the first time this year in WorldSkills Croatia, currently the most important and largest event in the Croatian vocational education system.

This national competition brings together the country’s most talented young professionals, their mentors and industry representatives in one place.

The event was held at the Zagreb Fair from 5 to 7 May 2026, gathering more than 350 students and over 200 vocational schools competing across as many as 44 disciplines – ranging from traditional trades such as masonry and baking to high-tech fields including robotics, mechatronics and IT. The competition is supported by more than 40 major partner companies, with KONČAR among them every year, offering students an exceptional opportunity to connect directly with potential future employers.

Participation in WorldSkills Croatia provides students with the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art tools and equipment supplied by partners, as well as the chance to receive job offers or scholarships. Winners earn the title of national champions and the opportunity to represent Croatia at European (EuroSkills) and global (WorldSkills) competitions. One of the event’s key objectives is also career guidance for primary school pupils: through the “Try a Skill” activity, they can handle tools, use simulators or experience VR technology to gain first-hand insight into various professions.

From a broader perspective, the event clearly demonstrates how the theoretical framework of vocational education reform is being translated into practice, as well as how the education system is adapting to the needs of a modern labour market. Notably, Croatia has become an example of good practice in Europe, having developed a system in which vocational schools act as hosts and active partners in organising the competition rather than merely passive participants.

The atmosphere at the Zagreb Fair was remarkable, with strong attendance – reminiscent of a major sporting event, but with the focus firmly on knowledge and practical skills.
