Successful testing completed for the HPP Egglfing and HPP Braunau projects

At the end of January, we successfully completed the testing of the new stators and rotors for the rehabilitation projects of the Egglfing and Braunau hydropower plants for the Austrian utility company Verbund.

Both power plants are located on the Inn River, which forms a natural border between Austria and Germany, with Egglfing officially classified as a German project and Braunau as an Austrian one. Following the successful completion of testing, installation activities for the first generators at both plants commenced in mid-February. The installation and commissioning of the first units are expected to be completed by the end of March. 

HPP Egglfing is equipped with six vertical Kaplan turbine units, each rated at 20 MVA, with a voltage of 6.3 kV and a rotational speed of 107 rpm. HPP Braunau consists of four vertical Kaplan turbine units, each rated at 35 MVA, with a voltage of 10.5 kV and a rotational speed of 83 rpm.

A distinctive feature of these projects is that the new stators are being manufactured entirely on-site. This includes core stacking and winding installation, a highly demanding and specialized process that demonstrates the expertise and capabilities of our teams. 

The customer’s confidence in our work was further confirmed in June of last year, when an option for the supply of two additional generators was exercised. Procurement and manufacturing activities for these units are currently underway at the factory, while on-site works are scheduled to begin immediately after the commissioning of the first generators. 

In the coming period, options for the supply of the remaining generators are expected to be activated-an additional two generators for Braunau and four for Egglfing. This will bring the total scope of both projects to ten generators, with the commissioning of the last unit planned for mid-2030.

The significance of this collaboration is best illustrated by the fact that, together with the successfully completed Ering project in mid-2024, the customer has entrusted us with the rehabilitation of three hydropower plants in cascade on the Inn River. With a total of thirteen generators, this project portfolio ranks among the most significant references in the field of hydropower plant modernization.
