Transformer for Sweden’s first wooden substation

In January 2026, KONČAR – Distribution and Special Transformers Inc. (KONČAR – D&ST) successfully completed the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) of a 10 MVA power transformer for an innovative grid project in southern Sweden.

The transformer will be installed at Sweden’s first power station built primarily from wood, a project designed to significantly reduce climate impact. The wooden structure lowers the station’s carbon footprint by around 17%, while additional green solutions include reused steel and electrical components, bluemint® Steel – CO2-reduced steel, climate-improved concrete, and re-refined transformer oil.

The transformer is filled with NYTRO® RR 900X, supplied by Nynas – a re-refined insulating fluid made entirely from end-of-life oil that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 70% compared to conventional transformer oil over its lifetime.Sweden drvena trafostanica

All routine, type, and special tests were successfully completed in accordance with IEC 60076, confirming high performance and reliability.

“We are constantly working on integrating more energy-efficient designs, advanced materials, and digital monitoring solutions into our transformer portfolio,” said Mario Ljubić, Director of the Medium Power Transformers Profit Centre and Board Member.”
